ALTO's Role in Achieving Justice: A D.C. Armed Robbery Case Study
A Washington, D.C., armed robbery case resulting in a 15-year federal prison sentence highlights the importance of employee support, evidence preparation, and collaboration with federal authorities in achieving accountability.
The Challenge: From Armed Robbery to Federal Prosecution
In November 2022, an armed offender robbed a CVS store in Washington, D.C., threatening an employee and fleeing with cash that included a concealed GPS tracking device. The offender was apprehended shortly afterward.
The case eventually moved into federal prosecution, requiring coordination among store personnel, investigators, and federal prosecutors.
When the store received a subpoena related to the case, employees needed guidance on how to respond and prepare for their involvement in the legal proceedings.
ALTO's Role: Supporting Victims and Strengthening Case Preparation
ALTO stepped in to help bridge the gap between the retail team and the federal justice system.
Working closely with the employee-victim, ALTO provided guidance and emotional support ahead of a meeting with the FBI and the employee's testimony at trial. ALTO also accompanied the employee in the courtroom during his testimony, providing continued support throughout the proceedings.
During a joint evidence review with federal investigators and prosecutors, ALTO identified an inconsistency between the employee’s recollection of the robbery and the surveillance footage that had previously gone unnoticed by the attorneys and investigators present. By raising the issue before trial, ALTO helped the prosecution team examine the discrepancy and prepare to address it.
ALTO's involvement continued throughout the trial
When it became clear that critical testimony regarding the GPS tracker was missing (testimony needed to connect the defendant to the crime), ALTO identified another employee who could provide the necessary information. The team quickly coordinated with the employee, helped prepare her for testimony, and ensured she appeared in court that same day, allowing the missing evidence to be presented before the trial concluded.
This timely coordination helped ensure that critical evidence was presented before the trial concluded. Later that same day, the trial ended with a conviction on all counts.
The Outcome: A Federal Conviction and 15-Year Sentence
In November 2025, the defendant was convicted on all counts in federal court.
In August 2026, the defendant received a sentence of 15 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
Throughout the proceedings, ALTO supported the retailer and its store employees, helped address potential evidentiary challenges, and facilitated communication between the store and federal authorities.
Turning Incidents Into Accountability
Retail crime cases do not end when an offender is arrested. They require sustained coordination, prepared witnesses, and effective follow-through through the judicial process.
This case demonstrates how ALTO helps retailers navigate that process, supporting employees and strengthening collaboration with law enforcement and prosecutors to help turn incidents into meaningful accountability.
